Lone Star - "The National Beer of Texas". From deep within the caverns of the Edwards aquifer comes the crystal-clear water that's helped make Lone Star the beer Texans call their own. Its smooth award-winning taste is carefully crafted and controlled to give you the consistent, drinkable brew you'd expect from The National Beer of Texas. Brewed and bottled by G. Heileman Brewing Co., San Antonio, TX.

How old were you when you had your first Lone Star? For me, I think it was about age 8. Don't get me wrong, I didn't have a whole one, but a sip of my dad's at some family gathering. I remember wondering why everyone was drinking this stuff because it couldn't be for the flavor. As I've learned, Lone Star is an acquired taste, but it's more than that, you drink it because well, this is Texas.

Now maybe you haven't heard of Lone Star, in which case you ain't from around these parts. Granted, it's not as popular as it once was, but it's still pretty much a tradition, at least in my family. (Well, maybe it's still popular among college students, too, because for $8 for a 20 pack, you just can't go wrong.) In fact, I recently attended my aunt & uncle's golden wedding anniversary, and they had their wedding album out. At their reception fifty years ago, everyone was drinking Lone Star longnecks. Now tell me that ain't loyalty!

June 2000, Pabst to close Pearl Brewery

Starting in June, Pabst production from the Pearl Brewery will be contracted out to the Miller plant in Ft. Worth. They will still make Pearl, LoneStar, etc. According to Pabst, the old Pearl Brewery was too expensive to run and would have cost too much to bring up to date. 161 people will lose their jobs. Sad too, because after they moved LoneStar production back here last year, Lone Star sales rose 17%. Read more about it at http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-000813.html.

History

Back in the good old days, Lone Star was brewed in San Antonio and was its own company. At some point in history, Lone Star was bought by Pabst. When Pabst bought Olympia they financed the purchase by selling Lone Star and Blitz-Weinhard, which they owned at the time (1983), to Heileman, based in Rosemont, IL. Thus began the Dark Ages of Lone Star. There were no more commercials, few promotions, and they made the Lone Star Brewery turn out Heileman's Black Label beer, which is some wicked stuff. This went on for a decade or so and then, on a tragic day, October 2, 1996, the famed Lone Star Brewery was shut down after being in operation for more than 60 years, and production moved to Longview, TX. Can I have a moment of silence, please ... thank you. Heileman was purchased by Stroh's in March 1996, though, and now Stroh's is closing up shop, so who knows what will happen to Lone Star? I've recently heard rumors that it may be coming back to San Antone, and be brewed by the Pearl Brewery, which is I believe owned by Pabst. Let's all cross our fingers.

3/11/99 Yes, I've heard yet another rumor. Apparently, Pabst is buying or looking to buy up the pieces of Stroh's, including Lone Star. If that happened, they would move Lone Star production to the Pearl Brewery. Keep ya posted.

Texans go to war
(You remember the Voodoo [Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager]. That's the beer that almost precipitated a war between Texas and Louisiana when the former banned it as "evil" and the latter retaliated by banning Lone Star.)

 (more to come...)
